As Cathy Azria explains “Just as for our ancestors, the hearth represented a focal point of life, my sculptures are designed as the focal point of the room, entertaining the dancing flames.” From the beginning, mankind has been fascinated by fire. A source of heat and comfort in primal times, no wonder the fireplace came to represent the essence of ‘home’. Today, our sculptures replace sticks and branches with steel shapes, yet they are far
from inert; steel is a natural material, glowing intensely when hot and emitting crackles as it heats and cools.
At the beginning of each commission we will assess the proposed fire opening and work with the client to decide which Collection of fire sculptures they would like to choose from. Each fire sculpture is individually created and signed.
Our fire sculptures are made of mild or bright steel. Depending which fire is chosen, we work the metal in our workshop to prepare for the composition: cutting lengths of metal, bending it to create loops or circles of different sizes, twisting it with our machinery. This process takes many days to complete and is stage 1 of the design.
Now the process of creation can begin: I start composing the sculpture slowly and carefully assembling different pieces of metal as if sketching it on paper, getting into the spirit of the piece and remembering the client’s input. Once satisfied with the
rhythm, proportion and balance of the piece as well as its size, we start to weld the pieces slowly to produce the final sculpture. If the client orders a Black finish, high temperature paint is then applied as a final stage. Alternatively, the metal will be left in its natural state allowing it to develop both a natural patina and rust – which adds to the unique qualities of the sculpture.
Natural: which will develop an evolving patina Black: no oxydation or change of colour Anodized electro-plated with zinc to delay rusting
We work closely with carefully selected Gas Safe Register technicians who we are happy to recommend. Clients can either contact us directly or ask us to co-ordinate the installation. Clients may have their own technician who we happy to work with. We can also make inner metal fireboxes to
measure so that they fit the aperture exactly. The fires can also run on bio-ethanol.
The full satisfaction of our clients (who often become friends) is essential. We are ready to help no matter what stage the project is at and, if necessary, can participate in the design of the surround.
